Position reports to Hospital Administrator and Chief of Staff. Works under direct supervision of Attending Veterinarian
General Description of Position: The technician is responsible for client and patient care and for assisting the veterinarian. Must exercise a sense of responsibility toward all patients in the hospital and have a sense of urgency.
Job Requirements and Physical Demands: Must effectively be able to read, speak and write in English. Must have basic computer literacy skills and basic arithmetic skills. Must be able to handle multiple unrelated tasks simultaneously while working in a busy environment. Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work on feet all day, and handle animals weighing up to 150 lbs. Must be able to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to work well independently and in a group. Must be punctual and be able to follow instructions from the veterinarians. Must follow practice dress code and wear scrubs at all times. Must have a professional appearance. Must be able to work with students in a learning environment and be able to follow the standards of the practice.
Essential Job Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively and work well with others. Must be able to properly restrain animals and assist the veterinarian in the essential tasks of patient care. Must be able to appropriately administer medications including fluids and blood products. Must have good technical skills including phlebotomy, catheterization, basic laboratory analysis and radiography skills. Must have a good understanding of hygiene and aseptic technique. Must understand radiation and lab safety. Must have a good general knowledge of veterinary technology.
Assist veterinarian in surgical procedures.
Operate medical equipment including laboratory, diagnostic imaging and anesthetic equipment.
Obtain samples for laboratory analysis and perform laboratory tests.
Care for hospitalized patients. Take patient vital signs and chart results. Administer medications.
Administer and monitor anesthesia under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Radiograph patients and assist with Ultrasonography.
Perform urinary and intravenous catheterization and place nasal oxygen lines.
Handle and restrain patients.
Maintain Pharmacy records, including controlled substance logs and anesthetic charts. Fill prescriptions.
Initiate emergency procedures.
Enter data into the computer and assist with generating invoices.
Discuss recommendations and finances with the client, as needed.
Maintain hospital cleanliness and organization.
Assist with reception duties as needed
Perform other duties as assigned.
Continuing Education Requirements: Certified technicians must receive sufficient CE each year and maintain licensure.

Town and Country Animal Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi is seeking a highly motivated, outgoing and dependable veterinary technician to join our team on a full-time basis. We are a multi-doctor practice that sees dogs, cats, and exotic patients including reptiles, birds, and pocket pets. Built in 2011, our state of the art facility includes a surgical suite, digital radiology, and a separate dental prophylaxis area with a dental radiology machine. Surgical procedures include elective procedures as well as endoscopy and orthopedics. We are a Silver Certified Cat Friendly Practice that has separate boarding facilities for our feline patients. We also have a separate boarding area from our hospitalized patient ward. Our fully functioning hospital has in house laboratory equipment including full chemistry, blood cell count, ECG, urinalysis, and fecal capabilities.
Job expectations include venipuncture, assisting during surgical and dental procedures including but not limited to anesthetic monitoring, administering injections, radiology, and execution of blood analysis machines. Applicants should be able to assist veterinarians in exam rooms and feel comfortable discussing education topics with clients. Applicants should be willing to learn exotic handling and medication techniques. Our clinic is affiliated with an outside emergency service so no night or weekend emergency work is required. Additional duties include interaction with clients and maintaining an organized and sanitary hospital environment.
